iTunes, copies files?

I was just trying to free up some space on my HD and apperently...when you import a file into iTunes..it copies the original file into the iTunes folder ie creating duplicate files on ur HD??
So my Mp3 collection actually takes up twice the space it does...anybody else noticed this?

You have the "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder" option checked in iTunes preferences.

If I delete the MP3 files not in the iTunes folder, will my MP3s still play on iTunes?

They do for me...as long as they're copied from the original files and have that option checked you should be fine (you can always try it with a album or a song u dont like that much anyway just to be sure).
