iTunes - deselect all apps?

I have over a thousand apps in my iTunes libary - a handful of these are installed on my iPhone. So, I plug my new iPad in and tell it to sync apps, but it selects every app I have! How can bulk deselect them all to install the few I want? Seems I need to take the tick off each icon?! Must be a quicker way!!

Hold down one of the control keys while clicking on an app checkbox. I forget if it's shift or conrol or alt(option). Just try them one by one.
