iTunes doesn't recognize my iPhone

Whenever I'd plug in my iPhone 4 into my laptop, iTunes would open a menu for my iPhone. Recently I've been trying that and the menu hasn't opened and I'm not sure where to go to install apps onto my iPhone. Help?
