iTunes DVD Back Up Discs?

Every couple weeks, as I add new music to iTunes, I make a DVD back up disc. (Using the iTunes back up button.) I've noticed that I've got a ton of temp files in my iTunes folder and iTunes itself pops up and displays a message something like: "Insert first backup disc...blah...blah..."

Can I delete these temps without harm? If something were to happen to my computer I would need the newest DVD back up, pop it in, and away I go, correct?

Or am I displaying a complete misunderstanding of the concept? Why all of the clutter?
