iTunes/external HD trouble

Suddenly, random folders on my external HD have turned to gibberish-titled files that cannot be trashed.

When I try to add the songs that are now nonexistent, iTunes simply repeats they cannot be found.

Thanks in advance for any help, and apologies for my crass external HD name. :-\
