I just bought a new 15" powerbook 1.5ghz which has the included 512mb ram. I have connected a 400gb external usb2/firewire drive which I have set up iTunes on my powerbook to use that drive as the location for music files. I then have about 260gb of mp3s (yes, it's a lot) that are in iTunes.

My machine has extreme slowness in iTunes when I play music files (either USB2 or Firewire, though I have been using Firewire mainly). Is it that I need more ram? Is it that I just have a massive mp3 collection that iTunes cant handle (it does fine with it on Windows)? Might it be the speed of the external drive that is the problem?

Any help / suggestions are greatly appreciated! thanks!
