itunes freezing sharing videos

i sometimes want to watch videos on my powerbook that are stored in itunes on my powermac. i have sharing set up. i can listen to songs easily but videos (about 250+- mb) freeze itunes with a spinning beach ball.

does itunes "download" the whole file from the other mac before playing?
