iTunes & gear drivers on XP

So after a lively debate with a friend of mine the other day I wanted to find out why Apple decided to go with gear drivers for iTunes. Maybe I'm showing my lack of knowledge in this area but what advantage does using the gear drivers as opposed to the default cd drivers bring users?
