So... I'm using iTunes 8.0.2 and whenever I delete a song (and confirm by clicking "move to trash") it deletes the song from the itunes interface but not the itunes folder. So my iTunes folder is filled with the songs that should have been deleted. I look in the trash and the songs are there so I empty it but alas... they remain in the iTunes folder. What can I do about this other than manually deleting everything??

Perhaps uninstalling iTunes and installing the newest version 9.1 and then seeing if when you re-add your songs it re-adds the so called deleted ones. Thats my two cents I have never had that problem so perhaps someone else has.
