I am trying to utilize the Home Sharing function on iTunes for our Macbook to link into my Mac Pro desktop and access it's playlists. The Macbook connects via wireless and the Mac Pro is plugged directly into the router. I also have a D-link G wireless Range Extender to repeat the signal.
The main problem is when the Macbook is on the other side of the house it connects to the range extender and can no longer access the Mac Pro for Home Sharing. I am guessing that the range expander is getting in the way somehow and the two computers cannot locate each other even though they are technically on the same network.
Once the Macbook links into the main wireless router - all is well.
The reason I have a range extender is because our iPods still require the G band (when is Apple going to enable the N capability of the chip?!) and the G mode does not reach as far. The N band wireless devices worked fine - but now with the range extender - they pick that up first as I assume because it sees that as the stronger signal. No big deal, until it comes to Home Sharing.
Any way around this?
I would love to remove the range extender - solving my Home Sharing problem, but causing our iPods to get a very very weak signal. Is there a way to configure my network or force the Macbook to only connect directly to the router using the N mode while keeping the extender?
I have looked at various signal boosters, but do not know what to look for.
The router I have is a D-link DIR-655 and the range extender is a DWL-G710
thx
