iTunes... How do I add my 300 gig drive without copying all the songs to my mac?

I have some songs I want to add to my playlist in iTunes that I have stored on my 300gig external drive... I don't want to add them to my mac drive so that I can save space.....
how do I do this?
cause add songs to library copies them all over...????

Open the iTunes preferences. Choose Advanced. Uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"

I have seen this option hundreds of times and never thought to uncheck it!
so stupid!
but I have never tried this option before so I guess I never paid attention to it...
