My iTunes Music library on my iMac is far too big to copy across to my MBA. It just would not fit.
Therefore, I was thinking of only copying across some selected playlists and albums.
Can anyone advise me the best way to do so? Will DRM prevent this?

Thanks

All your music should be in there. I was able to copy my music from iMac to MBA just fine but I haven't bought them from iTunes Store. Worth a shot at least

I'd just use a flash drive or external hard drive to transfer what you want. DRM won't be an issue, you will just have to authorize your MBA to play any protected content by logging in with your iTunes account.

My wife does this using the new home sharing feature built into iTunes. All you have to do is enable home sharing on the iMac, use the same home sharing information on the MBA, and then drag over whatever media files you want from the shared library to the MBA library -- all within the iTunes interface. Once she is done with it, she deletes it from the library on her MBA.
