iTunes import movie question

I would like to burn some of my DVD's onto the computer so I can upload them to my iPhone when I want them.

Ideally, I would like to store the ripped / converted DVD's on one of my external hard drives.

If I rip / convert the DVD's onto my external hard drive, and then import them into iTunes, are they being copied into an iTunes folder, too? i.e. am I storing a movie in TWO places, both the iTunes Movies Folder AND my external hard drive?
