Can anyone tell me where iTunes is storing all my
MP3 music and playlists information?

Usually, I find it under users/music/itunes/itunes media

Well, just went there and nothing is listed
inside the iTunes folder.

Is there some sort of protection in place preventing
me from accessing all my stored MP3s and playlists?

Look here :

In iTunes preferences. This shows you where your music is located.

Peace,

Thank you. I figured that out.

Here's the problem....

Suddenly (I am guessing with a recent
software update) all my individual mp3
files and playlists are no longer there.

There are only three files in the iTunes
Library (all LIB files)

Is this the way iTunes is now storing
all my music?

I wanted to back it all up to a hard drive.

Peace,

Great idea.

Unfortunately, only a few songs came up
in my library scattered through the drive.

I am looking for 5,000 mp3 files.

I'm telling you, there had to be some
recent update to Snow Leopard that made
access to your MP3 collection under iTunes
impossible.

May have something to do with music copying.

If you have the latest version of SL installed,
do a search for your music and tell me if all
of it comes up in your iTunes folder?

Thanks!

You scared me … a little bit.

But I don't think that that makes sense. My music is still where it was before the last SL update.

Something real whacky is going on and
it is probably just me who is having the
problem.

Spent 3 hours ripping The Beatles MONO
and STEREO sets to iTunes.

Sat here and watched them transfer.

Now, when I transfer them to my iPod
they can't be found. The songs are still
listed in iTunes but the files are gone.

Something in my system is doing harm
to my iTunes program. Really strange.

They should be there ;^)

With SL, I finally gave up on managing my own music files, and let iTunes
do whatever it wants . . . I selected "Keep iTunes Media folder organized".
And I do believe this was set when I did an iTunes 9.x update - I never had
it set before.

In the Preferences, I set the iTunes Media folder to be in my folder
"iTunes Music/iTunes Song Files". Then, iTunes put its files in a folder
called "Music", or "/iTunes Music/iTunes Song Files/Music". Note that this
folder is NOT the "Users/HomeDir/Music" folder.

I agree with what has been said - the files are there someplace. You just
have to find them.

Of course, you could always copy them from your iPod back to your hard
drive . . . ;^)
