iTunes/iPod issue

everytime i plug my ipod in iTunes freezes (i get the wheel of fortune of death) and have to force quit it and im like 400 songs off (it hasnt updated) but play back and everything else works just fine. i dont know if its an ipod issue or an itunes issue. i dont want to erase the ipod if its not the problem and i loose all my music.

any help would be great.
