iTunes keeps resetting location of iTunes Music Folder

I have my iTunes music on an external drive. I set the location of the iTunes Music Folder to the location on the external drive in Preferences. But next time I open iTunes, it's reset back to the location on the built-in HD where iTunes places the folder by default.

Anyone know why this is and how I can stop it?

External HD is sometimes disconnected (though not when I'm resetting it). Maybe if iTunes can't find the drive it reverts back?

Powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, iTunes 7.7.1.

I used this guide to move all my library to an external drive. Check this to make sure you have it moved over properly.

I'm doing this now myself, but what is the significance of removing the iTunes library database files as stated in Lifehacker? Apple's instructions are the same except for the moving of those files.
