Sorry for the length of this but I don’t know how to condense it more than I already have. I have a perplexing problem with my iTunes library and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. There’s actually been one problem after another. I’ve gone back and forth a number of times with senior advisors at Apple support.

Briefly, the problem began a week or so ago with my library on my Mac being unable to point to the correct iTunes folder no matter what I tried. In preparation for receiving my new iMac, I moved my large library – 1.2TB – to an external 2TB drive. My problems began immediately – my old computer refused to recognize the new location without an incredible amount of hassle.

I’m going to skip a few mishaps, though they are related to an inability to for the iTunes software to recognize the library location on my drive. However, after lots of hassle, for the most part, I was able to get my new iMac to get iTunes to recognize the new library location. “For the most part” refers to about 10% of my songs (90,000 in all) were still looking to the original location on my old setup.

In an effort to resolve this and a last ditch effort, the senior advisor had me delete all the tunes from the iTunes program and reload them. After 16 hours of processing, I got a message that my external drive was full and the process stopped. Bear in mind that I am using a 2TB disk with nothing on it but my iTunes library which is 1.2TB. Only one third of the songs were added.

When I do a “get info” on my external, it read back no available space. However, the only folder on it is iTunes, which still read 1.2TB. I’m confused. Perhaps there are hidden files on it.

I don’t know what else to do short of bringing my iMac to the genius bar, a major hassle. My collection is a life-long endeavor and is by far more important to me than anything else on my computer. I’m not knocking Apple phone support and Lord knows that most of them are well-qualified, but they all seem to be grasping at straws regarding this problem and my issue seems to be an experiment. One tech already did some harm in having me move instead of copy my iTunes library from the local drive in my old Mac to an external. It was nice having another safety net in having my music in another location. [I’ve since copied it to another external so I have 2 copies.]

If you made it through reading this, thanks! And thanks for any suggestions.
