iTunes library on external HD

I would like to set up iTunes so that not only my music is physically located on an ext HD but that when the ext HD is not plugged in, the library does not show up at all on iTunes .

Each time the databasis is created in my local music folder, I find this very awkward. How can I move it to the ext HD?

Basically i want an empty iTunes when the ext HD is not plugged in

prefrences ->advanced -> general -> change

then you can move it where ever you want.

Yes I saw that but it does not work. The file keeps being created on my local HD. And the full library is still there when the ext HD is not plugged in

You might be able to make the database files symbolic links to link to the external drive.
