I am considering getting an Imac to replace my aging and somewhat slow mac mini but I have a huge Itunes Library in the 700gig range, it resides on external drives. So here is my question how to a transfer my Library to the imac without losing my ratings, play count, and play lists while keeping them on the external drive?

Not sure about the ratings and such...but i used the "Home Sharing" feature today to import my music from one computer to another....BUT HOLY CRAP! 700GIGs of music??!?!? Jees...

Not sure how you would go about that.

thats gotta be mostly video/TV? I have about 50GB of music, and that is all i keep in my library.

If it is on an external, why not just hook the external to another computer and authorize it?

Yeah, home share worked for me as well. Although I only have 6 gigs of music , and it took me well over an hour to transfer over, so I'm really not sure how long it will take you.
