I just got my new Mac and I haven't transferred my iTunes library over from my old computer yet. This is also part of the reason I am thinking about doing it this way. The other reason is to just save space on my HD.

What are you thoughts on me keeping my iTunes library on a be thumb drive or external drive instead of on the hard drive.

That is exactly what I do, and many others too. Just copy over the iTunes directory to your external drive, then use iTunes preferences to change the location of the library. Done.

It no longer saves into the folder on my hard drive then? That iTunes folder will just remain empty?

Have you had any issues with your computer not recognizing the external later on?

Yes. As far as iTunes is concerned, it only uses the drive/file you tell it to use.

No. That should never happen barring drive failure. But drives do occasionally fail, so be sure to have a backup plan for all your important files.
