iTunes making a lot of iPhone/iPad backups

I have just found out that my /Users/ME/Library/Application Support/MobileSync folder is using up a huge 55GB on my hard drive. Just took a look and there are 17 separate backups saved! I only have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4.

Why does iTunes do this? At most I'd want 2 backups saved, not 8 for each device!
Is this a bug or iTunes meant to do this? Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?
