iTunes making duplicate copies

I recently started ripping some of my DVD's to put on my iPod, and I prefer to keep the files in the Movies folder in finder. However, when I import them into iTunes it creates another copy in the iTunes Music folder, so now I've got 2 copies of the same thing. I was wondering if there's a way I can can iTunes know about the movie so it can be loaded onto an iPod without having to create a duplicate copy. Thanks for any help.

Go to the preferences and uncheck "copy items when adding to library" or something like that
