hi all, i have a question about splitting itunes library. i'm thinking of landing a mba. and regardless of 128gb or 256gb, my library is waaaaay too big (as is my iphoto library). so i'd keep almost all of my music on an external, with just a few desert island choices on the internal ssd. plus, i like having the core itunes folders on the computer as opposed to the entire itunes being located on the external (plugging in external every time before opening itunes is tiresome). but my question isn't about splitting the music library - i think i have a handle on that. rather, i'm curious about itunes in general and have a few different questions to ask.
i have a 16gb iphone and, yes, i still do local backups. i like the idea of being able to connect it for backup without having to connect an external - in the instance that the ENTIRE itunes folder system is located on an external. my question is, how many gbs do the iphone backups use? is it kept somewhere in library? or is it kept in mobile applications folder within the media folder? is it in application support? i found 'mobilesync' which is 20gb. lastly, is there any way to keep those core itunes media folder on the mba but specify that the iphone backups be rerouted to the external?
speaking of the mobile applications folder can anyone please explain the 'mobile applications' folder in itunes media? i know this folder preceded the days of icloud. is it a relic? now with icloud backup and itunes remembering our purchased apps and available 24/7 without connecting to a computer, does this itunes mobile apps folder much of a purpose? i ask because it takes up over 2gb. the very rare times when i do look at the apps tab in itunes, it contains apps that i don't currently have on my phone. so i'm curious, what's the role of this? merely to purchase mobile apps using your computer?
lastly, once i deselect the 'keep media folder organized' & 'copy files to itunes media folder' boxes in preferences, and i split my itunes library between the ssd and my music going onto external, what is the most proficient way of importing music into itunes (music files NOT purchased through itunes)? bear with me, i've always kept those two boxes selected. with itunes managing everything, you can simply select the album songs and 'open with' itunes it imports them and sorts them accordingly (not saying that it doesn't ***** up the metadata occasionally). but once i split the library, will i need to manually create a new folder on the external drive, and add the music files to it, and then go into itunes and select 'add to library', and select the new folder containing the music? surely there's a better way!
