iTunes movie library/backup

Recently bought an Apple TV and started building my movie collection on iTunes, after working my way up to 40 movies I began running low on storage space. So I began storing my movie files onto a 1TB external hard drive and deleting them from my Macbook hard drive, only to check my storage again to see that my backups growing as my movies are being deleted, so I'm still running out of space. What can I do about this? Thanks.

You don't need to move your iTunes library, just the media folder to somewhere more spacious. It's up to you if it's a USB or network drive.
