Hello,

Recently I’ve rented a couple of movies through iTunes Movies because I’ve wanted to watch them in 4K with Dolby vision and Dolby atmos. The first movies I rented was the Batman trilogy. I was unsatisfied with the quality, but thought to myself that it might be because the movies are older.

Yesterday I rented Justice league and experienced the same thing. I decided to check the resolution using Xcode and it turned out I was right. I’m for some reason only getting a resolution of 1080p when streaming through iTunes movies and Apple TV+. Netflix and Disney+ gives me 4K with no problems at all.

What can the issue be? I’m really bummed that I’ve paid to rent movies that I could of watched on Netflix...

Have you got Quick Start turned on?
Settings, Apps, iTunes Movies and TV Shows.

Tried different HDMI inputs on your receiver or TV? Tried different HDMI cables?
I don’t see why a different cable would improve the output resolution of a specific app. However I did try playing the same content through the Apple TV app on my LG smart TV. Same bad quality

Could it be licensing restrictions in your country?
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. But according to Apple support they aren’t capping bandwidth anymore... It must be ******** since the same thing happens in the stand alone LG Smart tv app. I live in Sweden if that helps

You're able to get Netflix to stream in 4K? I can't get anything better than 1080p out of Netflix even on the test pattern videos that claim to be 4K. :(

What’s your connection like? Netflix for me is amazing!

Odd, I’m getting 4K iTunes content all the time. But I live in San Antonio Texas where 300Mbps is relatively slow and everyone has 1000 Mbps speeds.

Is your HDMI cable up to 4K standards? I had to order a new 4K cable when I first got my Apple TV 4K. My old HDMI cable wouldn’t support 4K.

Didn’t know it was common with high speed internet in USA. Have you checked with Xcode that it really is 4K? Because I get the 4K icon which indicates that it is 4K but it’s obviously not true...

my cables are. I recently bought new cables that supports higher bandwidth for HDMI 2.1

I think Apple has a bug from their side. Support doesn’t seem to know what’s going on

Ok so this is really weird... In display settings I changed from 60hz Dolby vision to 50hz And now I get 4K...
