iTunes MP3 back up

i am wondering if you can back up you itunes library in mp3 format on an external hard drive? anyone tried this?

That depends on the file format of your songs.

Of course you could convert your songs from m4a to mp3, but you'll loose a lot of quality. Do you really want to do that?

In any event, you'd want to back up your music in its original format. What would be the point of a lossy-to-lossy transcode backup?
