Here is my goal: I want to rip a CD to Apple lossless format but I want to download a 128Kbps version to my iPod shuffle and a higher bit rate version to my 30GB ipod.

I don't own one, but I thought that was the default behavior for the Shuffles.

For the Shuffle, it has the option to automatically convert to 128k AAC. For your bigger iPod though, I don't think they give you anything like that.

I wish they gave that option for the full-size iPod, too. I've started ripping everything as AIFF files since I have a 500GB external drive and hate having to convert them to 192K AAC files to fit them on my 60GB iPod.
