After what was probably a force quit of iTunes, the entire music library is missing from iTunes. The songs are all still in the iTunes folder, but the application does not recognize them as being there. From my understanding there are two library files (.xml and .itl) that could possible be corrupted. Any ideas on how to restore iTunes to the previous state (with playlists, etc). Thanks in advance.

Most likely it is the iTunes Library.itl file that is the problem, since it is a database of all the songs and playlists. Restore this file to its last known good state, preferably with iTunes shut down.

Do you use TM?

Yea... TM is an option, but it is just annoying since iTunes should be more stable than that. Thanks for the insight though, I guess this stuff just happens.
