itunes not responding? Help

So I have just tried to sync my iphone and itunes up (as I have done several times before) and when I plug it in the iphone does not change to sync mode and itunes does not respond and has to be forced closed.

I have tried turning off the iphone and restarting the macbook - any suggestions?

Anyone? Please - this is a real pain - nothing but hassle with the iphone since I got it. Literally a new problem a day.

Does anyone know what to do?
