If you look in the help section of the new iTunes 6... there is a section headed "Connecting any iPod, iTunes-enabled phone, or another music player".

You can connect any iPod, an iTunes-enabled mobile phone, or a third-party digital music player to your computer and then copy songs from your iTunes library to the device. With some iPod models, you can also copy photos and music videos, then view them on iPod.

iTunes works with several music players, but songs purchased on the iTunes Music Store play only on iPod and iTunes-enabled mobile phones. For information about which players are compatible with iTunes, see this article on the Apple Support website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93548.

For information about iTunes-enabled phones, go to www.apple.com/itunes/mobile.

I'm wondering if this is just the blanket statement, which actually just means "Motorola ROKR".

Or has hell frozen over?

It's done this since iTunes 1.0. Supported Rio players I recall. Nothing to see here, move along ;)
