iTunes on external drive

I have a 250 GB Fantom external drive with 26.6 GB space left on it. I have full albums in my iTunes library for the most part. Some of the albums play/load songs slowly (spinning beachball slowly). These albums that play/load slow are old AND new additions to the library. The majority of the albums play fine. Don't know why???
