I want my iTunes on an external hard drive. How can I do this with over 130 GB of music and still have good performance and quality?

If I disconnect the hard drive will it take a long time when it is reconnected to scan all of the files. I've had this happen and it's ridiculous.

What I did was remove all my music files off to two external HDs. One HD is used for playing the other is a mirror just in case of HD failure? As for performance, no problems. As for reading all the files after reconnection, not much of a delay.

As was pointed out above It is easy to move the library. Performance depends on the external hard drive. If it is a sow USB drive then it will be slow. Get a FW800 drive and it will be about as fast as your internal drive.

The problem is that people "price shop" the external drive looking for the cheapest one they can find. Don't do that.
