How come itunes only gives me the option to update to 4.2 and not 4.2.1 am i missing something ?

Or is 4.2.1 just left as 4.2 on apple servers just want to jailbreak and want to make sure I have the right firmware

Correct. Apple calls it 4.2 for the average joe but the file is actually 4.2.1. There was a critical bug found at the last minute before going public and they never renamed it on the public site.

I believe that 4.2 was 4.2 until Apple found a last minute WiFi bug and then issued a GM2 which is officially known as 4.2.1

Well actually on second thought...

If you had installed 4.2 GM before the WiFi bug was discovered (as I did), iTunes wont "naturally" update to 4.2.1. If you absolutely want to be 100% positive you have 4.2.1, do this.

Download the firmware here, go into iTunes and shift (Windows key, sorry don't know what Mac key is) and click restore and then locate the firmware you downloaded.

OR you could just open the About section in settings on your iPhone and make sure it says "Version 4.2.1 (8C148)"

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)
