Hi All,
Hoping someone can help with a problem I'm having with my new 2011 MacBook Air. It's not one I've seen before and I can't find anything else on here or other sites that solves my issue. If you have a link from here or elsewhere you can direct me to, I'd be very grateful.
So, on to the problem. My iTunes library is about 130GB, including music, TV shows and movies. Most of the content is purchased from the iTunes store, though some of my music is ripped from CDs. Last Friday, I used iTunes to burn 6 CDs (weekend away) and that's when the problems began. As I was burning the CDs, a message would pop up saying:
"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
I clicked OK and it disappeared, but it kept coming back. I probably saw the message 25-30 times. It only happened whilst I was burning CDs so I thought it may be some bug related to that. The CDs all burned properly so I didn't worry too much more about it.
I took my Air away with me and used it as my entertainment. This is when it really started to go weird. Seemingly randomly, I would select a song or music video and iTunes would either do nothing or pop up a message saying:
"The song "...." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
For the times I got the message, I could go into the iTunes Media folder and locate the song. It hadn't been moved. It's like iTunes 'forgot' where the file was. For the times I didn't get the message, I again located the file (using Finder) and re-added it to iTunes. Again, I hadn't moved the file, so not sure why it wasn't able to be found.
This has continued to happen to me for the last few days. Every time I re-locate or re-add a song, a few more 'disappear'. The files are all on my hard drive, so it seems to be a problem with iTunes locating them. At any one time, about 6-10 songs are unable to be located. As soon as I fix those, 6-10 more become problematic. No pattern that I can see, some old songs, some brand new, some purchased, some ripped.
I tried to recreate the iTunes library by doing the following:
Step 1: Export Library & Export Playlist
Step 2: Move the 2 iTunes Library files to a USB key and delete them from the Air.
Step 3: Opened up iTunes and had a blank library (which I expected). I then tried to import the playlist, but it conked out about 5% of the way in (don't remember the error message).
I'm not really sure what to try next. I am backing up the library to an external HDD at the moment as I'm worried there may be some disk corruption. I don't know whether I should completely trash the iTunes library and re-import all my music (losing play counts etc) or if there's an easier way? I'm also concerned that it might happen again, so wondering whether a trip to a Genius Bar is in order?
Has anyone seen this before? Any advice? Thanks in advance.
