Just to let everyone know I do not use iTunes match, so this would not be the problem. I have searched for this problem on the forums, without any luck.

I opened my iTunes application today and was presented with a prompt for my password. This happens frequently to search for purchased content that needs to be downloaded. I noticed 28 items being downloaded. It was the Ben Folds iTunes Originals that I purchased many years ago(12/13/07).

I quickly looked at the bit rate to see if there was a differences…&…well I was quite puzzled. The bit rate had dropped form 256(unprotected/purchased) to 128(protected/purchased). I also noticed that the “Kind” was now “Protected AAC Audio File” instead of “Purchased AAC Audio File”.

I was just going to delete the newly downloaded files and keep my higher bit rate files. To separate the files, I was just going to rename the “Recently Added” files to something I would know to delete. The tricky part is….iTunes was not adding the downloaded files to the “Recently Added” smart playlist, they were disappearing as soon as they were downloaded. My original files were also sent to the trash. The original purchase date and play count remained on the newly download “protected” files.

I assume that their was a conflicted with the artist Ben Folds and Apple just tried to cover their tracks by “protecting” the content without the user knowing it.

Has anyone else run across this on their files?
