itunes setup question

Is this approach ok to use? Currently I have a large itunes library to large to fit on my macbook pro's internal hard drive. So I moved everything onto an external hard drive. My plan is to use Carbon Copy Clone to backup my external hard drive to another external hard drive for off site storage. Question i have is if I have my itunes library pointed to the external drive will all the itunes files also be stored there ie the itunes library.xml file and other files that itunes uses or is this stored on the macbook pro's internal hard drive someplace? Reason I ask this is because when I build playlist and ratings etc etc I do not want to have to rebuild these when the external hard drive fails.
