iTunes sort artist question

how come when i check the "Sort Artist" in (for multiple files) and "Sort Artist Album" and enter the same entries for both, the songs are grouped in the lib, but the artist name is the artist of the first track?
i.e.
i have 3 songs
xxx - song1
yyy - song2
zzz - song3
i select them and set "Sort Album Artist" and "Sort Artist" to XYZ.
now they ALL appear under "xxx" in artists section of the library (but when i open that artist all others are shown too)

I wish there was a fix for this issue. It's a major bug. Though it doesn't happen with all my albums. For the life of me I cannot work out why for some albums it works and for others not. I'm not on my main machine at the mo but I'll do some more tests later and get back.

Does anyone have any idea on to fix this? It's driving me crazy! It works for one of my albums but not for the others, I have no idea why.
