Is anyone else noticing the iTunes store is using highly compressed JPEGs for its images? Not all images are affected, but the ones that are look like they're from the late 90s.

I do not notice this, which image are you talking about specifically?

I noticed this as well. Looks pretty awful.

Most of the images on the front page of the iTunes store (excluding album art) are affected from what I can see.

I noticed this a couple of evenings ago… i thought i needed to get some sleep!

but i've just noticed it again tonight - it's in the rotating images at the top of the store (on multiple storefronts), as well as in the bricks: lots of artefacts and noise in the images, blocky smudges around graphic-embedded text, jagged edges and smearing. Like a poor JPEG.

I also checked the Mac App Store, and the same problem is visible there, but maybe to a lesser extent.
:(
What's going on?

/conspiracy theory
Maybe the iTunes store team have wanted to have it this way all along (to save bandwidth, store costs), but Steve vetoed it. Now he's gone…

Wow, serious compression artefacts there. Ouch :(

I find that about as likely as Apple preparing to launch its own brand of garden compost >_>

good catch. wow. that is some ugly art. i am surprised apple has let it go this long. you'd think someone there would have caught on by now.

How long have the Images been lower quality?

This seems like a big deal and would not be surprised to see some blogs about it come Monday.

Possibly they wanted their javascript sliders to load faster.
