ITUNES STORE MOVIES VS SELF CONVERTED DVD MOVIES-Which is better?
Hi guys, firstly just wanna say how glad I am to have found this forum and see myself contributing here for a while.
Now I have a question which I hope someone can clear up for me. I have an Ipod Classic 160gb and usually either convert my dvds to play on my ipod then watch on my tv or I buy from the Itunes stores. Now here's my issue. I recently bought Marvel Avengers on DVD and converted it to my ipod on the best mode available to Classic being (720X480 H.264, 2500, 160KBS ). Now I forgot that I had pre-ordered a copy of the movie from the Itunes store. So when that version was finally released from the store, my Itunes started to automatically download it to my library. Now with two versions, the first being from my own conversion from DVD and the second being an itunes store version. I decided to compare. Hooked my AV Component Cable up to my ipod and made all the technical adjustments needed on both ipod and tv so they would both play on equal footing and I played both versions and asked others to view. My converted version actually looked better than Itunes store version. Then I compared the the stats of both versions:
My avengers
2.59GB
720X480
2:17:04sec
156 kbps
Itunes Avengers
2.31GB
853X478
2:23:50sec
122 kbps
So my version being 5mins less in length actually took up more memory than the store version and the picture quality looks better, ,my question is how is this possible? I always assumed that ANY video purchased from an Itunes store would ALWAYS have been optimised to play at the best possible quality for an Ipod, simply due to the fact that its Apple. Does that mean that whatever is availiable on the store isn't necessarily Apples best efforts and that there's room for improvement and better results from optimizing independently from a DVD? Is Itunes Store known for shoddy movie quality? Opinions please.
Also a side question here. I noticed on the guide on this site for converting DVD videos it recommends 640X480 but surely the best would be 720x480 as thats the maximum and thats also what DVDS start in, So if you plan to watch films on your ipod through your TV via an AV Component Cable surely 720X480 is better than a 640X480. Am I wrong?
