iTunes syncing problem

Since updating to iOS12, when trying to sync to iTunes I keep getting a pop up saying a software update is required to connect my iPhone. Wondering if any one else has got this issue.
 
I had that pop up, it downloaded and installed some software then I was able to use iTunes sync again, this was with an iPhone Xs Max though
