iTunes Transfer w/o Duplicates

Recently I did a clean install of SL on my MBP. Everything is going great, but I'm about to start transferring music from an external drive back onto my HDD.
During this process, is there any organized way to prevent duplicates from being carried over? I know I have some duplicates on my external drive.

Also, should I simply paste the files into User/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media?

If you want to import music into iTunes without it making copies, uncheck the bottom box in iTunes > Preferences:
