iTunes trouble: Wont let me transfer MP3 files to iPod Nano (music library greyd out)

Im having trouble while trying to transfer songs from my imac to my ipod nano through itunes. All songs on music library appear "greyed out" , so it seems like its in somekind of "lock" mode.. Transfer songs to my iphone however is not a problem.. only the ipod.
