The newest update for iTunes won't install saying that it can't verify the file. Is this a corrupt install file?

It happens occasionally - yes, usually a corrupt install file.
Simplest solution is to download the latest from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Installing that will overcome the issue.
