Does Apple allow you to upgrade a SD purchase to HD? (without having to pay full price)

I bought a few films several years ago when all they offered was SD.

I am also curious about upcoming 4k media.
I would be more inclined to buy media from Apple if they allowed for future upgrades.

I think not. I once (only once) accidentally purchased an SD version of a movie. It was SD-only at the time, that is my only excuse. Now though, there is an HD version available, and it even shows up as HD on my devices - right up until I move the cursor to 'Play'. :)

I tried deleting the movie in iTunes, and then re-downloading. No joy.

Unfortunately the answer is no and another thing Apple should consider doing is allowing you use the rental price towards the purchase of a movie.
