iTunes volume control stuck

The volume slider in my iTunes 12 is set to max and isn't responding - when I put the mouse over it there's a loud repetitive beeping sound and if I try to move the slider it just goes back up to max. The lowest volume I can get through reducing volume from the menu bar icon is still too loud. Restarting iTunes or the computer, checking preferences through Disk Utility etc etc doesn't help. Any suggestions? Thanks
