Itunes Volume setting with external speakers

Hello all,

I have a set of external speakers and am curious where I should set the volume slider within the iTunes application. Currently the slider is set to maximum and I adjust the level via the computer master volume (volume control via apple keyboard.) Does this sound correct? Open to suggestions.
