OK, this is hard to explain and even harder to categorize. Hopefully someone has an idea of what is happening.
Picking an iTunes radio station disconnects the network connection.
Before getting into the issue, here is my network setup.
Cable modem-->Airport Extreme-->2nd Airport Extreme via ethernet to 2018 Mac Mini (Mac Mini Wifi is turned off)
I also have an Airport Express whose sole purpose is to send AirPlay to my stereo via 1/8 jack to RCA receiver input.
The Airport Express is joined to the network, not extending the network.
The problem started a few weeks ago.
I play Internet Radio via iTunes and "Airplay" it over to my stereo via the Airport Express. For years, no problem.
When I want to port iTunes to my living room stereo, I turn on the "STEREO" button under Airplay. I turn this button off if I just want to listen over my computer. See attached screen capture.
I also have a remote Yamaha MusicCast speaker in my kitchen that is normally turned off.
Historically no issues with this setup, but recently this has been happening:
1-Click on an internet radio station in iTunes.
2-Wifi connection is lost. My VPN has to reconnect.
3-ALL radio stations all of a sudden show as "just played". See attached.
4-Wifi comes back
5-Click again on the radio station and this time it works.
This is a repeatable event. (And it does not happen if I am Airplaying to the remote KITCHEN speaker.)
1-Why is the wifi connection being lost when Airplaying to STEREO (this never happens with COMPUTER only)?
2-Why are all the radio stations all of a sudden showing as if they were played all at the same time?
3-Was there a recent iTunes (using 12.9.5.5) update in the last few weeks that is causing this?
4-The Mac Mini is fairly new, maybe there is an issue there somewhere. One idea is the second Airport Extreme that is connected directly to the Mini via ethernet. The Extreme is extending my network. Might something be going on with the Mac Mini/iTunes Airplay going back through the second Extreme, then on to the Express/Stereo?
I have an Apple TV 4 in my den. I thought of trying to connect that to my stereo but I would need a converter to work with the RCA jack connection.
When it works, it works. Eventually it does. Otherwise this has been a hair pulling experience.
Any ideas? Thanks for reading through this.
