itunes Will Not Synch

I have the current 8.0.1 version of itunes and the 2.1 version of the iphone software, but my iphone will not synch. If I click on "synch" in itunes, I briefly get the message "synch in progress," and then it cuts out.

Does anyone know the cause of this problem and how to resolve it?

Of course I'm sure. The words Sync [sorry about synch"] in Progress, don't appear on the phone, and my apps are not updated.

It didn't take me long to sync my phone either, when the sync worked.
