I have an iMac G3 running OS 9.2 with a defective internal CDRW drive. I attached an external USB CDRW drive. I can read data CDs with it, but audio CDs are just ejected. Blank CDs stay in, but are not accessible. iTunes 2.0 does not see the drive at all.

What is the least expensive way to get an external CDRW drive to work properly on this machine?

you should really upgrade your OS. I have a PowerMac G3, upgraded to OSX 10.4, you should atleast get 10.2.8 or 10.3 and have iTunes 5 or above. You should consider this, though I don't know how much RAM you have nor how much space you have. I think doing this could possibly solve your problem and benefit you. OS 9.2 is very old, and very outdated. I've upgraded my friends iMac G3 to 10.3.9 (Panther) and it runs great.
