iTunes won't let me sync iPhone 4?

I just bought a Macbook X 0S 10.4 and I'm trying to sync up my iPhone 4 so I can have a backup of all of my contacts, calendar, music etc...

When I plug in the iPhone I get a message that says, "This iPhone is in use by another user on this computer"

What does that mean and how do I sync?
